District 9 – Nimba County: A Better Life

The Challenge

Breaking the Cycle

District 9’s economy depends heavily on subsistence farming. Families often grow just enough rice, cassava, or plantain to survive, with little or no surplus to sell.

Outdated techniques, limited access to quality inputs, and the absence of storage or processing facilities mean that productivity remains low and poverty cycles continue.

Cocoa — one of Liberia’s most promising cash crops — is usually sold raw at very low prices because farmers lack the infrastructure to process it locally. Without new approaches, agriculture will remain a survival activity rather than a pathway to prosperity.

Our Strategy

From Subsistence to Sustainability

We believe agriculture must move from subsistence to sustainability and growth. Our approach is designed around building strong systems that empower farmers and connect them to opportunity:

Cooperatives

At the center of our strategy is the development and support of strong farmer cooperatives. Cooperatives give smallholder farmers collective bargaining power, help pool resources, provide training, and create a platform for shared ownership of processing equipment.

Staple Crops

Increase yields in rice, cassava, and plantain through training, improved seeds, and access to tools and extension services.

Cash Crops

Expand cocoa production with improved practices for higher quality, sustainability, and international market competitiveness.

Processing & Value-Add

Establish small processing units for rice milling, cassava flour, and cocoa drying so that value stays in District 9 rather being exported raw.

Market Access

Strengthen value chains that link farmers directly to buyers, cooperatives, and stable markets, ensuring consistent income.

Progress So Far

Building Momentum

While we are still in the early stages of building this agricultural transformation, momentum is growing:

Early Partnerships

Initiated early partnerships for small-scale processing units with NGOs and private sector actors

Cooperative Support

Supported three cooperatives, and engaged with the Ministry of Agriculture to advocate for support

Land Identified

Identified over 2,000 acres of land across the district for smart agriculture initiatives, including cocoa and staple crops
